Hodac ya'll!

You may or may not be caught up with us lately, but we have been up to quite a bit! We have been spring cleaning, making monumental strides in our journeys to Total Healing and Total Health, adding some delightful NEW PRODUCTS to zenwombs.com, and GARDENING! Lots and lots of gardening! Catch up on the latest gardening and other videos here. We have planted several trees, seeds, and various different kinds of food for us to harvest and eat. It's been so much fun, enlightening, connecting, and informative. As it turns out, gardening is one of the most righteous things you could do! We are learning every step of the way and in the midst of all this learning, we've learned about using WORMS for composting how beneficial they are to any garden and the planet. Yes you read that right, worms! "Why worms," you may ask...

WHY WE DECIDED TO HAVE WORMS IN OUR SPACE

-They get rid of kitchen scraps. This means less garbage going into the landfill!

-Worms will eat through your bin full of kitchen scraps and newspaper (that would have otherwise gone into the trash) and turn it into compost; providing you with the most nutrient-dense fertilizer ON THE PLANET called "worm castings" or "worm poop."

-It's cheap to produce! The only cost was the worms and a bin to get started. (Many people already have at least one around the house that's storing old junk that they aren't using.)

-We are in the midst of changing our atmosphere and turning the desert into an oasis;so whatever we can do to help with that, is one, if not the biggest "why" we are doing what we are doing.

ABOUT OUR WORM BIN

Our worm bin has holes at the bottom and is straight to the ground. Ceka calls this a "Free Living Worm Farm," so that they have the freedom to come and go through the earth as they please. See the full detailed video she made on this below:

If you know anything about Ceka, you know that she is one to take charge and just go for whatever her latest passion is. We are both very new to gardening, but she makes it her business to study everything in so much depth so that she knows the ins and out and can teach it to the rest of us. Tzohe helped a little bit and I drilled a hole or 2 at the bottom of one bin, but the rest was all Ceka. Her dedication and tenacity is so inspiring... So, as a beginner in this process Ceka made a couple of mistakes along the way to include: putting too much carbon in the bin and putting too much food in the bin; which she promptly corrected. She also learned along the way that the water used in the bin needs to be perfect for the worms because their skin is so soft; like the inside of your cheek soft.

ABOUT OUR WIGGLY NEW FRIENDS & THEIR POOP

* All worms will compost food, but the Red Wigglers and other certain kinds of worms are considered the best for composting because they stay on the topsoil. If you go to the forest, pay attention to the leaves on the top as that is where the Red Wigglers are; earthworms go deeper in the earth.

::See the video below to see how this works::

* Worms are nocturnal so they do most of their work and eating at night because they don't like the light AT ALL. When the sun comes up, they bury themselves deeper in the soil to sleep. Once nighttime hits, they come out to eat so even if they are exposed at night, there is no light to get to them.

* Worms will eat the newspaper and kitchen scraps, but what they are really attracted to is the bacteria that's eating the decaying matter.

* Worms eat half their body weight in food every day which means if you have a pound of worms, they will eat up to half a pound of food every day or 3.5lbs every week. So you should have ½ a pound of food in your compost bin daily. If you have 10lbs of worms, they are eating 5lbs a food a day.

* They populate really fast, (every 5-7 days) but will also regulate themselves in terms of space. If they are getting too crowded, they will stop reproducing.

* Worms are hermaphrodites meaning they have both male and female parts. When they come together, they exchange in their male and female parts and both leave off pregnant. They go in and lock into each other…it’s really quite interesting! This video will show you what this looks like.

* Worm castings (worm poop) is called "black gold" because of how rich it is in nutrients. It is a natural fertilizer that, by itself, is more than enough to fertilize your plants. It's just as good, if not better than chicken/cow manure...and it doesn't stink!!

* Worm castings contain:

-Bacteria

-Calcium

-Enzymes

-Magnesium

-Microbes

-Nitrogen

-Phosphates

-Potash

-Trace minerals

-The elusive vitamin B12!

* Worm castings perform the following functions:

-Aerates soil

-Inhibits root rot

-Makes plants grow faster

-Makes plants grow taller

-Makes produce grow larger

-Enhances germination and yield

-Fortifies foots and plant structure

-Helps soil retain water

-Makes great pet food

-Enables your plants to absorb more nutrients in the soil

WORMS ARE CEKA'S NEWEST PASSION

Ceka really loves learning the process of the what the worms do and how they do it. She loves watching them and overstanding what all they do for us. She has plans to build them a beautiful home where they are so comfortable. We currently have our worm bins to the ground as we mentioned above, but we also intend on having others that we keep in the house as well. She plans to take the best care of them so that they can help to take care of the planet. She will continue to pray to and over the worms in regard to what we are doing here. She's also actually thinking about worm farming commercially; and with that, we will go through the process the hard way. The "hard way" means that we will need to figure out how to harvest the castings as opposed to buying one of the assembly line machines that shake the dirt and castings away from the worms; we'd rather go labor intensive to take care of the worms because they are helping to take care of the household.

THE TAKE HOME MESSAGE

We made mistakes, which is to be expected when venturing into anything new, but we feel that this is something EVERYONE should and could be doing in their homes. It can be done in a small tub/bin in your house/apartment; PLUS, the juice that comes from the worm pee and the water that is added to the bin, called "worm leachate," is the BEST LIQUID FERTILIZER ON THE PLANET for plants and flowers. It will bring flowers back to complete health without Miracle Grow. You can do it in your home AND it's super cheap to set up. Worms will save on your trash and having to buy fertilizer from the store...the more worms you have, THE BETTER!

It's THIS easy!

Worms are really good friends to the planet and are enabling us to become more eco-friendly which will helps us to leave a greener footprint on the planet. Once you learn the ins and outs about keeping worms for compost, it’s something that should be shared with others! (hence, this blog) Once you have your own worm system going, you can take a few to share with someone else to help them get their own worm bins started. Take this valuable information to others and share it!! This is one easy and fun way we change things on the planet for better. If you grow plants or anything else, you definitely want a small worm bin to benefit your plants, get rid of your food and make an amazing compost. You can literally make your own soil in the tub.
